European Soccer looks for foreigner limits
Are there too few “homegrown” soccer players?
The question begins with the idea that England has yet or reach a European Championship, because of too many foreign players and not enough Englishmen. Scheduled to be brought in front of the FIFA congress in Sydney, Australia next year, the plan includes a requirement of six national players to be on a teams starting line-up. This would require limits on foreign players in national leagues, which itself may be challenged.
A recent article states that these ideas and plans tend to come to light when a top team begins to perform at level than previously known. On the other hand there are those who feel the idea is a waste of time and embrace the challenges that have come with allowing a more diverse roster of players.
For some, the addition of foreign players has been a blessing as there is the opportunity to face more experienced players, build talents and trade information. It is not a case of trying to be something you are not; it is simply the opportunity to raise the level of play for everyone.
All too often we look at a problem and seek the easiest solution, or a way to get out of it. What some may not see is that this so called problem could actually be an opportunity to further train players by having them face players with more experience. It is then a more rounded team or league can be built.
