Women's World Cup to be held in Germany
Germany has been awarded the opportunity to host the 2011 Women's World Cup. In the past 4 years both the Men and Women's world cup teams have brought attention to the country. After hosting the most successful Men's World Cup, financially, being able to host the Women's Cup 5 years later, president of the German Soccer Federation, Theo Zwanziger said, "We are very proud and grateful for this distinction......."
While Germany reveled in the announcement, Canada, who was also in the running felt disappointment. Canada's presentation focused on the success of the Under-20 World Cup and how the sport has taken the country by storm and emphasized that they seek similar success for 2011, given the chance to host the 2011 World Cup.
In the end, tradition won out - Europe has a larger and passionate following. Like Canada, the U.S. is on the path to boost the popularity of the sport. We may never reach the level of other countries, but we are determined to give them a run for their money.
